Since the beginning of the school year, the communications department has been working to plan the annual student film festival Streaming Canvas. The festival will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, March 11 in Meyer Hall, and it will present to the audience a wide array of films that Dreyfoos students have been working on this school year. The price of admission is five dollars for students, and ten dollars for adults.
Communications senior Nyna Van Epps and digital media junior Joseph DiRienzo have been planning the festival by putting together the Dreyfoos Film Association, which meets to discuss advertising for Streaming Canvas and to manage deadlines. Dirienzo and Van Epps have been working with film teachers Christine Tieche and Ancil Deluz to pick the films from those submitted that show the hard work, dedication, and creativity that goes into making a film. CAPA (Communications Arts Parent Association) has also helped the festival by providing concessions, and teachers in other departments have been helping to encourage other art students to contribute as well.
“Getting submissions from outside the communications department was the hardest part.” DiRienzo said. “I think in previous years streaming canvas has been presented as being communications department only and we wanted to include everyone.”
There will be about 25-30 films in the showcase, ranging from all different grades and departments. Film students have been working to advertise the film festival through posters and commercials, and an invitation for the event is located on the homepage of edline. This is the only time throughout the school year that film students present their work, besides the small amount of films played during the Communications Showcase in April. All money raised from Streaming Canvas will go to supporting the communications department.
“The best part about Streaming Canvas has to be being able to admire the work of my peers,” Van Epps said. “We go to such a talented school, and it’s not every day we get to show off the film students, so being able to watch the films, quite literally, on the big screen is the best part about the film festival as a whole.”
The students have been working hard this year to make sure that when the lights flash and everyone takes their seats on March 11, they enjoy with what they see from start to finish.
