The Dreyfoos Jazz Band Ensemble I garnered a triumphant victory at the Swing Central Jazz competition in Savannah, Georgia from March 30 to April 1. The group, directed by band teacher Pedro Hernandez, received a $5,000 prize and a plaque to commemorate their achievement.
“I’m so proud to lead such a great group of students,” said Hernandez. “It’s truly an honor and a privilege to work with them; I’m confident that they’ll go on to accomplish even more amazing things in the future.”
Every year, the Swing Central Jazz organization selects 12 extraordinary high school jazz bands to display their skills and face off for a grand prize. Besides competing, students also have the opportunity to learn from the nation’s top educators and instructors.
“I had an amazing and unforgettable time in Savannah,” said strings sophomore Nikki Lickstein. “I’m the only girl in jazz band and I’ve never been to Georgia, so initially I was a little apprehensive about performing. But overall, I learned so much from the clinics and the competition. The band came together as one and performed our best in order to secure a huge victory.”
The Dreyfoos Jazz Band consists of 19 students, ranging from sophomores to seniors. Throughout the three day competition, the members bonded over their shared experience, experiencing a mutual growth in both their music and their own personal lives.
“I feel so much closer [to the Jazz Band members],” Lickstein said. “When I won, it was such a triumphant victory–but it wouldn’t be the same without them. Last year, we didn’t even make the cut to be in this competition, but now look where we are. We all worked for this; we all hoped for this–and now that we finally get to see the rewards of our efforts, it makes all the hard work worth it.”
