Recently, many people have taken to Instagram to stalk one celebrity who knows how to keep his followers entertained: Cole Sprouse. Sprouse is best known for his role on the hit mid-2000’s Disney Channel show, “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.” As the show ended in 2008, Sprouse lost the spotlight for a bit, went on to finish high school, and eventually graduated from New York University in 2015. Now, he is stepping back into mainstream media through his three Instagram accounts: one for his photography, one to showcase the fan art that people send to him, and one which he has appropriately named “camera_duels.” All of these accounts provide hours worth of material for his followers to get lost in. From dramatic rants that are so well written that they could be published in the opinion section of the New York Times, to beautifully taken photos, to the hilarious banter between him and his fans, Sprouse is truly a visionary when it comes to keeping an audience with these accounts. But what exactly makes them so great? Allow me to explain.
Sprouse’s photography account, “colesprouse,” has some really amazing work on it. He works with professional models and other photographers to create pieces that are full of vibrant colors by placing them in beautiful, natural environments. He travels a lot, so the pictures are also very diverse. One can be mesmerized for hours scrolling through this account. I’d highly recommend it for those who would actually like to enjoy the outdoors, but are trapped inside by Florida’s annual summer lightning storms.
His second account, “sprousemasterworks” is the only account of his that is not verified by Instagram, but rest assured, Sprouse has confirmed himself that he runs the account. However, the fact that someone would assume that he doesn’t run it is not very surprising. Sprouse stated in the account’s bio that he has dedicated it to “the artworks that were drawn by the loving Sprouse fanbase.” People direct message him portraits they have drawn of either just him, or him and his twin brother, Dylan, and he shares them on this account. This does not seem too odd until you look at the work with the captions. The art he posts is usually either obviously poorly drawn, or has elements incorporated into it which are purposely meant to be made fun of. These portraits are accompanied by Spouse’s ironic commentary, which are often written to sound like serious art critics. He once posted a drawing of him and Dylan, which was comparable to the work of a five-year-old given a mechanical pencil with the following thought-provoking caption:
“Strong outlines with delicate finger smudging reveal the internal struggle apparent within the piece. The directionality the artist purposefully included into the gaze begs the question, ‘justice?’ Like the ancient Greek theatrical masks, the happiness is just that…a mask. There’s a real sadness to this piece, and only is it obvious when looking into our eyes…are you looking?”
This sarcastic humor makes up for there not being many posts on this account, so while it may be a short lived time of entertainment, it’s worth the time nonetheless.
The third account, and possibly the most amusing one, is “camera_duels.” This account documents Sprouse’s everlasting war with fans who take “secret” pictures of him in public. The objective of the camera duels is for Sprouse to spot someone “discreetly” taking a photo of him, and in turn take a photo of them doing it. In his bio he challenges, “may the fastest camera win.” He posts these shots on the account with dramatic commentary that sounds like it came straight out of a war hero’s novel. The shots range from people trying to take pictures of him from afar in public parks, subways, and one shot even features one of his fellow New York University graduates taking his picture from behind, clad in purple and gold gowns on their graduation day. Like “sprousemasterworks,” these post’s captions are dripping with irony and serious over-analyzation. My personal favorite upload is one of a woman taking his picture on the subway. How did he know she was taking his photo? The woman forgot to turn off her flash. This is the commentary that followed:
“A blinding flash. Quick blur. Momentary desperation. Primal cooing. Inevitable defeat. Temporary victory. Ahh yes, I know this ritual well. Is it wartime atrocity? Nay, tis a #cameraduel. The subway is a photographic operating theater, and I am the cold body upon the table….a duel was stewing. A young woman pulled the number one #rookiemistake: flash. So excited was I that I blurred the shot. Yes fair people, even pros are prone. Fear not, the bright light of shame shines through….Unfortunately, the only real illumination was upon her characteristic frown of embarrassed defeat.”
This theme can be seen throughout the entire account, and once you get into it, the captions flow like a hilarious narrative. One of a brave young man fighting patrons of New York to see who will be victorious in the ultimate end game of the camera duels.
No matter which account you choose to stalk, I assure you that you’ll have a great time doing it. Sprouse is currently making a huge comeback, both on social media and in the acting world. His return to acting is underway, and he will star in the CW’s upcoming show “Riverdale,” based off of the famous “Archie” comics. Sprouse has recently dyed his blonde locks black for the role of Jughead, and the release date for the show has yet to be announced. The future holds a lot of promise for Sprouse, and he is sure to be a compelling force in social media for years to come.
