Five years have passed since the last time Thomas McCabe walked through the halls of Dreyfoos, but now, as a college graduate, he has returned, hoping to bring “passion and inspiration” to the film students of the school.
Thomas McCabe took the position of artist-in-residence at his alma mater. Despite living in California and recently graduating from the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts, he decided to take the job.
“I’m making money to feed myself, but the thing that keeps me going every day is my art,” Mr. McCabe said.
Mr. McCabe said his goal in life was to become an actor, and he worked on many student films throughout his time in college. As an artist-in-residence, however, his objective was to immerse students in the “beauty of filmmaking” and bring to light the importance of taking risks within their art.
“This is the time to try different things, and if you like them, keep going. If you don’t like them, come back,” Mr. McCabe said.
Mr. McCabe will be shadowing film teacher Ruby Hernandez up until December. During his time as an artist-in-residence, he plans to give mini-lessons on aspects of the film process and assist Mrs. Hernandez with any workshops in class. Mr. McCabe works one-on-one with students or, more commonly, in groups. He also helps with equipment usage, technique, and application.
