A New Dawn for Dawson

Assistant principal Drew Dawson can be seen around school greeting students, checking bags at the metal detectors by the bus loop in the morning, or walking around the cafeteria during lunch talking with students about their days. Mr. Dawson joined the school’s administration team this year as the new assistant principal for the music department.

After teaching math for eight years at Eagles Landing Middle School, Mr. Dawson became the single school culture coordinator at Carver Middle School for two years, working to keep up school spirit and culture. This will be his first year working at a high school and his first time serving as an assistant principal.

“I knew I was ready for that next step to be an assistant principal, so I was holding out for that type of opportunity,” Mr. Dawson said. “And so for about a year and a half, I was kind of keeping an eye on things, looking for something that just seemed like it fit. And when Dreyfoos (opened up), it just kind of seemed like a golden opportunity, one (where I) didn’t know if it would work out, but (it) just felt like one that I had to put my name out there and see what happened.”

Since Mr. Dawson had never worked at an arts school, it took him some time to adjust to the school, especially since he said it was “a little bit of a difference from what (he) expected to be at.” However, Mr. Dawson said he is enthusiastic about different performances and is especially excited for Spirit Week, specifically mentioning how he wanted to help the teachers win the Student Teacher Basketball Game.

“It’s just really refreshing to come somewhere where everyone just really wants to be there,” Mr. Dawson said. “(The students) love being a part of this school and are just so respectful to each other.”
