Hair littered the floor of the gym as newly-shaved heads basked in cheers of hundreds of students during lunch on St. Baldrick’s Day on Feb. 9. The St. Baldrick’s club held the event to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. Students participated by either shaving their head or cutting off hair and by donating to research for kid’s cancer. The event during lunch featured live music, poetry readings, and viewing of the haircuts and shavings for the audience.
The club began three years ago and has been hosting events ever since. St. Baldrick’s was originally founded at Dreyfoos by current club advisor and visual senior Dalton Taylor. He still currently advises and oversees the club.
“For me, starting this club was about giving me encouragement that I am well enough to give a voice to people who are in a more devastating situation than me. Our main goals are to raise as much money as possible for childhood cancer research, to throw an amazing event, and to show that bald can be beautiful and a choice,” Taylor said. “Our first year, it was extremely daunting to execute this event. Each year, we learn so much, and the event improves overall and gains more support. We now have an incredibly organized club, better awareness of what we do and why, greater events, and most importantly more money for children’s cancer research.”
