Students celebrate prom: A Night in New York
Categories:

As students enter the convention center, they are met with Brooklyn and Queens street signs, lamp posts, flowers, and other iconic New York decorations. Students dance with the Statue of Liberty, the New York Skyline looks down on them, and “New York, New York” filters through the speakers.

Prom took place in the Palm Beach County Convention Center Saturday, April 20. The junior class council started preparing for prom at the beginning of the year, discussing what theme they would choose and researching proms in the past.

“I just want everyone to have a good time,” junior class council co-president and digital media junior Rebecca Chen said. “I want prom to look like a memory.”

After the class council announced that the prom theme would be A Night in New York, some students, such as visual senior Lauren Blake, took it into consideration when deciding their outfit plans. Some students looked at examples of New York street style or took inspiration from the special aspects of New York.

“I was inspired by Lady Liberty when they said, ‘New York,’” Blake said. “I was thinking of Great Gatsby too when I thought of bringing the gold with the green.”

The night ended by crowning prom royalty. After students voted using the tickets they were given upon arrival, Coral Johnston and Justin Blanco were chosen. Students, like visual junior Lindsay Gamble, felt that prom became a part of their high school experience.

“I think going to prom is part of the coming-of-age experience, and it’s a rite of passage,” Gamble said.
