Due to Hurricane Milton, the Palm Beach County School District closed all District-operated schools and offices for three days: Oct. 9, 10, and 11. Friday, Oct. 11 was supposed to be the last day of the first quarter. For some teachers, the missed days pushed back lessons and tests. Due to the missed days of school, the Palm Beach County School District moved the final day of the first quarter to Oct. 16.
“We’re at least a week behind in our lesson plans, probably a little bit more,” science teacher Anuska Larkin said. “We had to postpone a test, and the biggest thing has been impacting grades.”
The timing of the missed days of school occurring at the end of the quarter also had an impact on some teachers’ ability to put in final grades for the first quarter.
“Getting all the grades in with(in) a timely manner, I think that was the biggest challenge for most teachers,” Mrs. Larkin said. “The missed periods where we couldn’t see the students and get the makeup (assignments) from them was the most challenging part for me.”
However, other teachers with different lesson plans did not face as much of a challenge with the missed days affecting their class time.
“It (the missed days) did not have much effect on my overall lessons,” English teacher Richard Ehrlich said. “Fortunately, I was ready for it and just moved things or canceled things as appropriate.”
