A leprechaun, Cupid, and George Washington all sit down for lunch in a high school cafeteria. This might sound like the start of a corny joke, but it’s the reality of the first day of Spirit Week.
Each year for Spirit Week, students can be found spreading some school spirit while following the theme of the day for their respective grades. Today, I’m answering the question of which grade has the best dress-up theme each day.
Holiday Day:
The best holiday theme to dress up for during Spirit Week was a bit of a difficult one, as they all have a lot of potential for students to show the most spirit and go all out. In the end, however, I think the Fourth of July theme for the freshmen takes the cake when it comes to the best holiday dress-up theme. In my freshman year, I remember people coming in with American flag capes and red, white, and blue face paint galore, and I have no doubt that this year’s freshmen will go above and beyond to represent their grade. I wouldn’t be surprised if people dressed up as the founding fathers (someone absolutely should), and that is part of what’s so great about the Fourth of July theme: there’s the most potential to go all out and earn Spirit Week points.

Music Genre Day:
The best music genre to dress up in was another tough one, but in the end, I think it’s the sophomores who get lucky with the techno-pop genre (although they might have to conduct an hour-long Pinterest dive to try and figure out how to dress for it). For the freshmen, everybody’s idea of country music is going to be jeans, a flannel shirt, and a straw cowboy hat. While Y2K is going to be interesting, to say the least (bedazzled tracksuits and glittery makeup are going to make quite the statement), techno-pop is going to be the most fun with bright neon clothes and accessories, such as fingerless gloves, light-up sunglasses, and fishnets that are sure to bring a (techno) pop of color to campus, as well as a fun party vibe.

Generations Day:
The best-dressed decade is without a doubt going to be the ‘70s. Even though the GoGo boots from the ‘60s and the crimped hair from the ‘80s are going to be fun (all the freshmen are just going to wear jeans and a white t-shirt for the ‘50s), the ‘70s variety of disco, flower child, and a Brady Bunch-esque wardrobe is going to be the best way to show some class spirit. There’s a lot of potential to go all out from the ‘70s with the funky patterns, voluminous hairstyles, bell bottoms, and circular sunglasses. If the juniors stay true to the ‘70s fashion (except going without deodorant – that’s a trend that can stay in the ‘70s) they are sure to give themselves a boost during Spirit Week.

Class Cliques Day:
For Class Clique Day, I think the seniors have the best dress-up theme with “goths.” Not only will it be the most fun for the underclassmen to see with the black wigs and all of the heavy eyeliner, bold lipstick, pale foundation (my favorite game to play is “Foundation or Sunscreen” — trust me, it’s about a 50-50), and black eyeshadow, it will be fun for the seniors to dress up in as well. I’m most excited to see the thrifted gothic black dresses with beautiful designs and lace on them, paired with chunky boots and skull-adorned necklaces (you’re welcome, Spirit Halloween; we keep you guys in business). I think the seniors’ elegant earrings, dangling silver and gems, and dark chokers are going to be the best part of Class Clique Day. No matter how people interpret the “goth” theme, it’s sure to be a sight to see, and I can’t wait to watch how the seniors represent their school spirit.

Class Theme Day:
This year’s superhero theme is going to make an amazing cast for the Lip Dub, which will be held on the day of the Pep Rally this year. When it comes down to it, however, the juniors get the best superhero representative with Spider-Man on their side. What makes “Spider-Man” the best theme is that there isn’t just one Spider-Man; there’s a variety of characters from different cultures and countries, such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Punk, Miles Morales, and Spiderman Noir, which provides the most opportunities for people to dress up as their favorite Spider-Man, or even create their own Spider-sona. With America’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man behind them, there’s no way they can go wrong.
