Basketball superstars such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant have made dunking in the National Basketball Association (NBA) about as common as a jump shot. In high school basketball, however, dunking is not such a regular occurrence, specifically at Dreyfoos. That all changed on Wednesday, Jan.29 against Florida Atlantic University (FAU) High School at Grandview Prep when communications senior Jordan Oregero received a pass from communications senior Munashe Kwangwari.
“[Kwangwari] drove through the lane and he passed it to me and I took two steps [and] went up for the dunk,” Oregero said. “One of their [players] tried to run under and stop me and I dunked it over him.”
Oregero had dunked in practice before, but doing it in a game was a whole new challenge that no one else on his team was able to achieve before him. Not only did he finally achieve it against five competitive opponents trying to stop him, but he dunked directly over a defender. Oregero’s dunk caused instant chaos on his team’s bench and shock from the opposing team’s bench as well as their fans.
“The bench went crazy [and Kwangwari] ran up and down the court,” Oregero said. “The other team’s fans got really quiet.”
Oregero’s dunk was not the first in the history of Dreyfoos basketball. However, it was the first one in six years, according to former athletic director and guidance counselor John Webb. The basketball team went on to beat FAU High School by 10 points.
