New assistant principal Drew Dawson supervises the cafeteria during lunch. Mr. Dawson’s duties on campus include lunch supervision, metal detector duty, and door-holder for building three during class changes. “It's a school where everyone seems to just welcome you and make you feel like you're a part of the culture and a part of the school,” Mr. Dawson said. “I just feel like everyone has a place here, and that's really cool.”

Mrs. Waugh watches her students as they work on graphing data from the lab that took place during class. Prior to becoming a teacher, Waugh worked as a fire protection engineer. ”I thought it would be most impactful if I could teach science here [at Dreyfoos].” Mrs. Waugh said. “And I had loved my physics teacher. He was part of why I became an engineer,”

Surrounded by his students, Mr. Angulo demonstrates the process of developing an image in the darkroom. He transferred the paper from the developing chemical to the stop bath using a pair of tongs. To protect the light-sensitive paper in the darkroom, students must leave their phones, watches, and other devices with lights outside.

After studying film and dramatics at the University of Southern California, Dreyfoos alumnus and former communications major Tommy McCabe now works as an artist-in-residence, assisting communications teacher Ruby Hernandez in teaching students film production. “It was just something that interested me, the opportunity to come back here and work with young minds and kind of see the trajectory of where art is going,” Mr. McCabe said.

Looking at the phlebotomist, dance junior Finleigh Townsend gets blood drawn for her first time. On Oct. 16, National Honor Society (NHS) held its blood drive in the school parking lot. Oneblood Donation and its Big Red Bus visited the school campus to find volunteers for blood and plasma donations. Their mission is to replenish and maintain a healthy blood supply in the community. “It makes you feel really good to have had an impact on so many people by doing something that didn't take much time and didn't hurt me at all,” said Townsend.

She believes that anything can be solved with a good country song and a car jam-out session. She is so excited to cover the vibrant community within Dreyfoos and feels bittersweet her time on the staff is coming to an end.

On Dec. 4, students, families, and alumni filled the Dreyfoos Hall at the Kravis Center of the Performing Arts for the 30th annual Prism holiday concert. Through donations from the family of novelist James Patterson, this performance has been held at the Kravis for the last eight years. This year, the music department added interactive elements to the display, such as the Grinch swiping presents off of the stage and vocal senior Ben Myers, dressed as Santa, sprinkling tinsel over singers during an a cappella piece. “The show has only gotten better since I've been in Dreyfoos,” piano alumnus Hunter Fani (‘08) said. “It was [a] really amazing experience to see, and brought up a lot of memories of stuff that we used to do during Prism time and doing the Prism concert series. It was a real experience.”

According to the Pew Research Center in 2018, over 95 percent of teens have access to a smartphone, with 45 percent of those surveyed saying they were online “almost constantly.'' To combat this issue from infiltrating their classrooms, the science department implemented a system known as “phone jails.” “There have been hundreds of studies done that show the negative impact of cell phones and learning, even if they are not in use. Just their mere presence is distracting,” science teacher Kendra Huff said. “They have been linked to poor grades, comprehension issues, and the inability to focus in class. I have seen this trend occurring in my classroom over the last decade and it gets worse each year.”

Signing into her school district portal, ESE Coordinator Julie Craver finishes her tasks before an upcoming meeting. “I do meetings [with] kids that have been identified as having some kind of a learning disability, or maybe have an emotional disability or a physical disability,” Mrs. Craver said. “[Then], we go through a process of [deeming] them eligible, and we develop what's called an Individual Education Plan (IEP) for those kids.”
