Leaning on Bob Kunst’s car, a sign saying, “Trump vs. Tramp” faces potential customers. Kunst is a local conservative activist in support of the Republican Party. The phrase on the sign references 2024 Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris as a “tramp,” a derogatory term for women suggesting promiscuous behavior.

Principal Bennett visited the gallery Jan. 10 during lunch along with other guests, including his friends, teachers, and administration. “I went on Monday after school when his whole family came to the exhibit and I got to meet his grandmother, who is pictured in many of the paintings, and that was really special,” Principal Bennett said. “To see her next to the paintings, he is so spot on, and I am so proud of that.”

More than a Mindset
Dancing to the song “Flex” by Cupid, digital media freshman Sophie Jones and other students participate in the Black Student Union (BSU) field day on Feb. 10. BSU Spirit Week is an annual event that allows students to celebrate Black History Month through music, dance, and other activities. “Music unites everybody in the club because we all know a bunch of songs from growing up, so once we hear a song that we recognize, (we) all come together,” Jones said.

Broadway Backwards was performed in the Black Box Theater during lunch on Jan. 31 where female actors performed as male characters and vice versa during presentations of Broadway plays and musicals. The actors had to audition to get into the performance and were from all grade levels.

This lunchtime event, organized by junior class council members piano junior Karen Zhao and theatre junior Juliet Rojas, included activities such as coloring, drumming, and yoga to spread awareness about mental health. The event also included tables representing various organizations in the health field, where students could talk to professionals to learn more about mental health. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know all of the organizations and all of the representatives of each activity group,” Rojas said. “I definitely have heard a lot of good feedback from students. It is a very enjoyable experience, and I can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Acting as a movie producer and a talk show host during their improvisation game, Batista and Mora narrate scenes of a "movie" while accompanying performers, such as Moore, who portray what Batista and Mora describe. “Sometimes when the shows don’t land on a specific holiday, we don’t have a theme,” Mora said. “But this show, our presidents decided to have the theme as movies and T.V. shows, hence our t-shirts.”

On Jan. 10 during lunch, Diaz had his art pieces exhibited in a solo show in the Building 9 gallery in recognition of his creations throughout the year. “It makes me feel very proud of myself because I work really hard, long hours after school,” Diaz said. “It also makes me inspired and hopeful that other people would do the same and want to show their own work. I think there's a lot of very amazing artists in the department that would really benefit from doing a show like this. It really just makes me feel connected to the community.”

Lila Goldstein is a second-year staffer on The Muse as well as News Editor. Lila has a passion for all kinds of writing, especially journalism, and is rarely ever without an opinion on current events. Outside of school, Lila loves to read, watch films, and collect records from vintage music stores (she so far has 62 albums). If you ever get in to a car with her and the Beatles radio station doesn’t immediately come on, something is terribly wrong. Lila is a green tea snob and West Palm Beach foodie, and always has a restaurant recommendation for Dreyfoos students. Overall, Lila is very excited to work with her News staffers to create an incredible section and make The Muse the best magazine it can possibly be.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and author Tyehimba Jess reads selections from his book “Olio” to students. “Olio” features the stories of black entertainers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Jess presented a series of five syncopated sonnets on twins Millie and Christine McKoy, who were some of the characters. “As a creative writer, I have never seen anything presented in the way he did. He presented concrete poetry as a body, rather than just a piece of literature,” communications junior Elise Nau said. “He didn’t tell the stories of others; he embodied them.”

Santana chose a piece from “In the Heights” because she could relate to the musical’s Puerto Rican origin. “I was so proud of myself after I found out I received a superior [at the International Thespian Society District Festival] because this was a song that is very personal to me as a performer and something I’ve connected to for quite some time,” Santana said. “I finally got the chance to tell this story and it was a very exciting day for me.”
