The boys basketball team had its first day of tryouts on Monday, Oct. 25 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. Twenty-six players attended the tryouts which will continue until Wednesday, Oct. 28.
“Tryouts went well today,” Social Studies teacher and head basketball coach Jeff Stohr said. “I’m looking for players that are quick, reliable, defensive minded, and team oriented. There were kids here who were pretty good with a lot of spirit and definitely those who wanted to be here.”
The players began the tryouts by stretching, and then did various drills of full court three on three and five on five. Individual evaluations followed in drills like “King of the Mountain” which is when one player receives the ball and can only dribble twice, then shoot while being covered by a defender. To finish practice, Mr. Stohr separated two groups to run sprints- the freshmen with the sophomores and the juniors with the seniors. They had to run the full length of the court six times in 30 seconds.
“Today was tough, not everyone was well conditioned but I know everyone will work hard,” strings junior Aaron Rivera said. “I’m not going to get much sleep tonight thinking and preparing for tomorrow.”
Mr. Stohr plans on keeping 12-14 players for the team.
