Deep-fried snickers, donut sandwiches, cotton candy, and elephant ears are some of the many foods one can find at the annual South Florida Fair.
The wide variety of foods has always been a hit at the fair. People flock to the stands to get whatever deep-fried food their heart desires.
What people do not know when buying that two-pound cotton candy is that they will be regretting their decision later on. Whether it is immediately after when they are vomiting behind one of the rides, or the day after when they cannot even look at food because they are still burping up cider donuts.
“I know it’s bad for me but I just don’t care,” communications junior Kayla Gallagher said. “It’s gross but in a good way.”
According to the Cleveland Clinic, one elephant ear, a common favorite, has between 500 to 700 calories in it. If it were paired with cotton candy which has 25-35 grams of sugar in it, that lucky fair-goer would consume well over their needed sugar intake for the day. Nevertheless, people still go back to the fair and indulge in the sweets once more.
Maybe it is because the fair only comes once a year, so people feel the need to enjoy while it lasts. Maybe it is because they need to eat their feelings after seeing all the cute couples roaming the fair. Whatever the reason may be, fair-goers always find themselves stuffing their faces before the night is over.
“It’s my favorite part of the fair,” dance senior Ally Scirroto said. “I just pig out on stuff that I can’t get year round. I love it.”
There are two solutions to the wonderfully horrible problem of overeating at the fair. The first option: say no. Do not look at the food stands. Plug your nose when you are walking by the deep-fried goodies. You will thank yourself for this later. Or just go for it. You already know you are going to give in, so what’s the point of trying to resist the urge? You may want to throw up 15 minutes later, but in the five minutes it takes for you to consume a whole bucket of cheese-fries, you will be on cloud 9.
The next time you take a stroll down fried food avenue at the fair take a second. Weigh your options and choose wisely.
