As the new coach of Dreyfoos’ track and field team, social studies teacher and Athletic director Ross Vening is using his past experience and connections as a coach at Forest Hill High School to help the team perform at their highest level.
“I was a track coach at Forest Hill High School for over eight years,” Mr. Vening said. “I learned over the years that the best way to deal with such a large amount of students is to separate them into their own individual groups, and work with each one [separately] during practice.”
In the past, the track and field team has been practicing on the Dreyfoos field, despite the lack of key equipment, a track, and a regulated field. This year, thanks to Mr. Vening, the team is able to hold practices at Forest Hill High School, which allows for much more opportunity to practice on a track that is similar to once the team would run on during a meet.
“The main benefit is they get to run on a real rubberized track,” Mr. Vening said. “Also there are throwing pits and jumping pits, so it really gives all of them exposure to what a proper facility is like.”
Students who were a part of the team last year have already started to embrace Mr. Vening’s coaching style. Many members of the team believe that he is making a difference with his new techniques.
“Compared to last year, we have been much more organized and focused,” communications junior Makoa Beck said. “Having his connections and experience really pays off, and the team this year is really benefiting from it.”
Even though their first meet was rained out, Mr. Vening has high expectations for the year, and believes that all the practice they have been doing at Forest Hill will pay off.
“Our first meet obviously didn’t go as planned due to weather,” Mr. Vening said. “Our next meet however, I think we have a chance to perform really well and impress everyone watching.”
