In the weeks preceding Spirit Week, students often scour the internet for different outfit ideas. Whether it be Amazon searches for neon leotards and cowboy hats or Instagram deep dives into students’ past outfits, students hunt for outfits that will match their classes’ themes. For some students, Pinterest, a social media service designed to enable the saving and discovery of photos as “pins,” is a source of inspiration.
Communications sophomore Gabriella Escobar
“My mom introduced me to Pinterest. She would look with me on her feed, and then I ended up making my own account, and now I just do it myself.”
Visual sophomore Corina Paolini
“I make little (Pinterest) boards with outfits that I want to find. Then I see what I have at home, and I build my outfits based on that. I started because I wanted to find drawing references, but then it kind of went on with outfit inspiration, and I used it for my everyday outfits. For Spirit Week, I just look at my boards and I’m like ‘Oh, I like this. This is super cute.’”
Dance junior Keira Bliss
“If you look up any of the themes on Pinterest, you get so many ideas on what style you should go for, and some posts have links to exactly what they are wearing. It makes it a lot easier to find outfits that are actually cute and trendy rather than a Halloween costume you find on Google search.”
Communications freshman Leyla Benoit
“I’ve been using Pinterest for years, like that was my app. Usually when I search up on Google, it’s just actual costumes from Party City, but with Pinterest, it’s actual outfits that people make, so I just get my inspiration from that.”
